On Saturday, Feb, 8, six members of the VASJ track and field team were selected to compete at the Spire High School Showcase meet. Athletes had to hit a qualifying mark or time to be considered to compete against some of the top athletes in the United States and Canada.
The Vikings had a fine showing, with many events placing in the top 25 and season/career bests:
Junior John Gibson had a career best in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.24 seconds.
Senior Darion Taylor placed in the top 10 in long jump, jumping 20’ 4.5”.
Junior Joseph Efford tied his season best in the high jump for second overall at a height of 6’.
Junior Ny'Yer Abbas competed in shot put, finishing top 20, and weight throw, finishing in the top 12.
The boys 4x200 team (Darion and Davion Taylor, Caleb Marshall and John Gibson) had a season best of 1:32.51, finishing fourth overall.
The 4x400 (Gibson, Taylor, Marshall, and Taylor) had a season best of 3:27.93, also finishing fourth overall.
Both boys and girls track teams are set to compete at the Spire High School Indoor Games on Feb. 16.
